BOOK: In McAlpine: Romantic Modernism (Rizzoli), the residences featured draw from architectural languages ranging from Elizabethan and Dutch to colonial Caribbean and agrarian American. The book opens with Bobby McAlpine’s own newly designed house, featuring exquisite spaces that are modern in expression but classical in order and balance. Other projects include a white-on-white neoclassical pavilion-by-the-sea in the Bahamas, a masonry dwelling in the rolling hills of Virginia, a quintessential American country house in Tennessee that combines the familiarity of a farmhouse with crisp minimalism, and an exuberant house sited on the edge of a pastoral golf course in Alabama.

"Pure classicism and modernism are daunting in their dogma. When you throw the cloak of romanticism over them, they become more subtle and even more powerful. They turn a house made of warm butter into something that possesses an 'across the crowded room' kind of attraction, as immediate as a flash of lightning or the roll of thunder." — Bobby McAlpine

BOOKBeauty & Mischief: The Design Alchemy of Blackman Cruz, foreword Ryan Murphy (Cameron Books)

WHY YOU CAN'T MISS: With a design ethos that runs the gamut from operatic to telenovela, Blackman Cruz pieces are rarely perfect but always entertaining: from a pair of chairs from Al Capone’s retreat to a rare 1930s Arturo Pani desk to the one-of-a-kind creations of designers such as Carlo Bugatti, José “Pepe” Mendoza, Mike Diaz, Lika Moore, Jane Hallworth, and Gianni Vallino, among others

WHERE: David Sutherland, 1025 N. Stemmons, Suite 340, in the Dallas Design Center

TXDW Sponsors: David Sutherland, HN Capital Partners, Dallas Design District, Monogram Luxury Appliances, New Orleans Auction Galleries, Frontgate, Cosentino

 A Primer on the Hunt:

Blackman and Cruz work independently, gathering a mix of the curious and the refined. Blackman treks across the United States and abroad, stoking his passion to discover things he’s never seen before. Like an early nineteenth-century ceremonial paddle from the Austral Islands in French Polynesia meticulously carved with a sharktooth tool or the surprising rustic minimalism of French Alps château décor, where tree-trunk slabs were fashioned into rough-hewn cabinets. Cruz stalks Mexico and Europe, with annual pilgrimages to the Parma Antique Fair in Italy, and trusted dealers who cater to his classical, expressionistic tastes. He might come home with a pair of Poliarte brutalist sconces that have a gothic tinge, or something esoteric, like a big architectural buffet designed by occultist Rudolf Steiner, whose theories on education, agriculture, and spirituality favor an organic style in which right angles are verboten.

The Sister Parish Collection is available through JAMES.

Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller, Carrier and Company Interiors, are known for creating stealth luxury for such clients as Anna Wintour and Jessica Chastain.
